Andrew Mason, born in 19811, is the founder and CEO of the group buying site Groupon, a site offering discounts on various products from local businesses.

Biography

Andrey Mason grew up in Mt Lebanon suburb of Pittsburgh in the United States. At age 15 he launched a small business delivery Saturday morning, called Bagel Express. In 2003 he obtained a degree in music from Northwestern University in Chicago.

On leaving university he worked in web design for multientrepreneur Eric Lefkofsky (en). As a result of obtaining a scholarship, he interrupted his work with Lefkofsky to return to school at Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago. He also worked at Electrical Audio recording studio under the authority of the sound engineer Steve Albini, he considers an inspiration of his ethics work2.

Several years later, Mason Lefkofsky lent one million dollars in venture capital to start the platform The Point. This platform, now inactive, was the first entrepreneurial adventure of Mason on the Internet and aimed at coordinating group activities and fundraisers. In November 2008, the ashes of “The Point, was born on group buying site Groupon. The site has experienced tremendous growth and tremendous success. After 30 months of existence, Groupon continued exponential growth. The company recorded sales of U.S. $ 713 million and 456 million loss in 2010 the corresponding results for the first quarter of 2011 were $ 645 million in sales and 146 million in pertes3.

On December 3, 2010, Groupon has rejected an offer from Google $ 6 billion to acquire the site4. On March 17, 2011, Bloomberg announced that Groupon preparing for 2011, an IPO based on a value that could reach 25 billion5. By cons, many analysts believe that Groupon can have such a value because the business model the company is relatively easy to reproduce and, although the company currently enjoys an edge over its competitors, they quickly grabbing a significant market share, reducing sales, profits and the value of compagnie6.
